The Unexpected Reason I Built This WhatsApp Web Extension

April 1, 2026 — Sometimes the best products are born from pure personal frustration.

When WhatsApp introduced Channels, it brought a new way for creators and communities to broadcast messages. On mobile, I found it tolerable. But on WhatsApp Web, it quickly became a major annoyance.

The Annoying Navigation Loop

My daily routine on WhatsApp Web started looking like this:

  • Open a chat with someone
  • Accidentally click into the Channels tab (where recommended channels appeared)
  • Go back to a chat
  • Switch to another conversation
  • Click back into Channels again by mistake

I caught myself repeating this pattern far too often. It was breaking my flow and wasting time. The more I noticed it, the more it irritated me.

One day, I decided enough was enough. I opened the browser’s developer tools, inspected WhatsApp Web’s frontend code, and found the Channels element. Removing it turned out to be surprisingly straightforward.

The Search That Changed Everything

Before building anything, I assumed someone must have already solved this problem. I spent about five minutes searching the Chrome Web Store for extensions using terms like “WhatsApp customizer,” “remove elements,” or “WhatsApp Web cleaner.”

To my surprise, none of the existing extensions offered a simple, clean way to hide the Channels tab — at least not in an intuitive way I could easily understand and use.

That moment was the spark. I thought: Am I missing something, or is this actually a gap?

From Small Fix to Full Extension

I started with one very specific goal: hide the Channels section on WhatsApp Web.

But as often happens when I get into a project, the vision quickly expanded. Once I had the foundation in place, I began looking at what other extensions offered and thought, “Wouldn’t it be great if my tool could do that too — but simpler and more user-friendly?”

I spent just one or two weeks building the first core version. Then I published it.

The philosophy was simple: start small, ship fast, and let real usage guide growth — exactly like planting a seed and watching a tree grow over time.

Why This Approach Works

Beginning with a minimal viable solution keeps things focused and manageable. As feedback comes in and my own understanding deepens, the extension naturally evolves into something far more capable and polished.

Today, I treat this project with much more seriousness and long-term vision than when I first started. What began as a personal fix has turned into a tool designed to genuinely improve the WhatsApp Web experience for many users.
