Why We Removed a Pinned Chats Feature from Our WhatsApp Web Extension
April 15, 2026 — Building features fast is exciting, but speed without careful thought can lead to unnecessary work.
This week taught me an important lesson about balancing quick responses to user requests with proper validation of whether a feature truly adds value.
The Request That Seemed Useful
A user I’ve been corresponding with via email suggested adding a pinned chats option. The idea sounded reasonable — being able to pin important conversations so they stay at the top of your chat list.
I implemented the feature based on what I understood from the conversation. I assumed the user wanted the ability to pin specific people (like a chat with your mom) directly in the sidebar for quicker access.
The implementation looked nice and integrated cleanly with the rest of the extension.
The Realization That Changed Everything
Only later did I notice something important: WhatsApp Web already lets you pin chats natively.
Once I saw that, the feature started to feel redundant. Even though our version looked slightly cleaner, it created new challenges:
- It required carefully matching WhatsApp’s exact sorting behavior
- Maintaining perfect alignment with the official interface added complexity
- Most importantly, it duplicated functionality that already existed
Why invest time maintaining a feature that doesn’t solve a real gap?
Learning to Say No to Single-User Requests
Not every suggestion — even from a helpful user — needs to become a permanent part of the extension. When a request comes from only one person, it’s essential to ask:
- Does this solve a widespread problem?
- Is the feature already available in WhatsApp Web?
- Will it actually improve the experience for most users?
In this case, the answer to all three questions was no. After careful consideration, I decided to remove the pinned chats feature entirely.
Removing code is sometimes harder than adding it, but it keeps the extension lean, focused, and free from unnecessary bloat.
Building with Intention
This experience reinforced a key principle for our development process: speed is important, but thoughtful evaluation is even more critical. We’ll continue to implement user-requested features quickly — but only when they genuinely fill a missing need and improve the experience for many.
The goal remains the same: deliver a clean, powerful, and truly useful WhatsApp Web enhancement without clutter.
