WhatsApp Web Keeps Logging Out? Fixes for 2026

You log in to WhatsApp Web, scan the QR code, get your chats syncing — and a day later, you're back at the QR screen. Or you close your browser and have to scan again the next morning. Or worse: WhatsApp logs you out repeatedly throughout a single day, no obvious pattern.

This is one of the most common WhatsApp Web complaints, and the fix depends on why it's happening. There are six or seven legitimate reasons WhatsApp Web logs you out, and almost all of them are fixable. Here's how to diagnose what's actually going on and stop it for good.

Why WhatsApp Web Logs You Out (The Real Reasons)

Before the fixes, it helps to know what's actually triggering this. WhatsApp Web sessions break for a small number of specific reasons:

  • Browser-cleared storage — your browser or a privacy tool is wiping the session token
  • The 14-day rule — your phone has been offline too long
  • Hit device limit — you have more than 4 linked devices
  • "Keep me signed in" wasn't enabled
  • Multiple browser profiles or guest mode — WhatsApp logs you out for security
  • WhatsApp forced a security relink — a server-side issue triggered a global re-login
  • Outdated WhatsApp app on your phone

If you can identify which of these applies, the fix takes seconds. The list below is ordered from most-common to least.

Fix 1: Enable "Keep Me Signed In"

Solves: Logout every time you close the browser

This is the single most common cause and the single fastest fix. By default, WhatsApp Web treats your session as temporary unless you tell it otherwise. Close the browser, lose the session.

To make WhatsApp Web persist between browser restarts:

  1. Open web.whatsapp.com and log in
  2. Click the three-dot menu at the top of your chat list
  3. Look for Keep me signed in and toggle it on (or check the "Keep me signed in" box at the QR screen before scanning)

If you've already logged in without checking it, just log out and log back in with the box ticked.

This alone fixes the problem for most people. Try it first.

Fix 2: Stop Your Browser From Clearing Cookies on Exit

Solves: Daily logouts that no setting seems to fix

If WhatsApp Web logs you out every single time you close the browser — even with "Keep me signed in" on — your browser is probably set to clear cookies and site data on exit. This nukes WhatsApp's session token automatically.

To check in Chrome:

  1. Settings → Privacy and securityCookies and other site data
  2. Make sure "Clear cookies and site data when you close all windows" is off

In Firefox:

  1. Settings → Privacy & Security
  2. Under History, make sure "Clear history when Firefox closes" is unchecked (or doesn't include cookies)

In Safari:

  1. Safari → SettingsAdvanced
  2. Make sure cookies aren't being auto-cleared

After turning this off, log in again with "Keep me signed in" enabled, and the session should now survive browser restarts.

Fix 3: Stop Third-Party "Cleaner" Tools From Wiping Cookies

Solves: Mysterious logouts on a schedule, especially overnight

This one is a hidden killer that almost no troubleshooting guide mentions. If you use a "system cleaner" tool — CCleaner, BleachBit, CleanMyMac, or similar — it may be automatically deleting your browser cookies on a schedule (often daily or at startup). Every time it runs, your WhatsApp Web session dies.

To fix it:

  • Open your cleaner tool's settings
  • Find the cookie cleanup or browser data section
  • Either disable cookie cleaning entirely, or add web.whatsapp.com to the whitelist of sites whose cookies should be preserved

If you've been blaming WhatsApp for logging you out every morning and you have CCleaner running on a schedule, this is almost certainly the answer.

Fix 4: Reconnect Your Phone (The 14-Day Rule)

Solves: Logouts after long periods without your phone online

WhatsApp Web supports multi-device — meaning you can use it with your phone offline — but only for up to 14 days at a time. After that, the linked session expires for security reasons and you have to scan the QR code again.

This is expected behavior, not a bug. If your phone has been off for weeks (in a drawer, lost, traveling without it), this is why you're being logged out.

The fix is just to reconnect: open WhatsApp on your phone with internet, leave it for a minute or two so it syncs, and your linked devices' 14-day clock resets. We covered this in detail in our guide to using WhatsApp Web without your phone.

Fix 5: Check You Haven't Hit the 4-Device Limit

Solves: Unexpected logouts when you log in somewhere new

WhatsApp allows up to 4 linked devices at a time, plus your phone. If you try to add a 5th, the system silently boots out the oldest session — which feels like a random logout but is actually working as designed.

To check and clean up:

  1. Open WhatsApp on your phone
  2. Go to Linked Devices
  3. Look at the list — every browser tab, every linked computer, every old laptop you forgot about
  4. Tap any session you don't need and select Log Out

While you're there, log out anything you don't recognize at all. If a session looks unfamiliar, ending it is the safe move.

Fix 6: Avoid Incognito / Guest / Multi-Profile Browser Mode

Solves: WhatsApp logging you out unpredictably

A few browser modes intentionally don't persist data and will guarantee WhatsApp Web logs you out:

  • Incognito / Private windows — all data is deleted when the window closes
  • Guest profiles — same behavior
  • Multiple browser profiles that WhatsApp detects as separate sessions — for security, WhatsApp may force a logout
  • Aggressive privacy extensions that block third-party storage

If you've been using WhatsApp Web in any of these, switch to a regular browser window in your main profile. Log in once with "Keep me signed in," and you should be set.

Fix 7: Update WhatsApp on Your Phone

Solves: Sync failures, unstable sessions, repeated relink requests

If WhatsApp on your phone is several versions out of date, the multi-device system can get unstable — linked sessions may sync poorly, drop, or get force-logged-out.

Open the App Store (iPhone) or Play Store (Android), search WhatsApp, and update. After updating, open WhatsApp on the phone and let it sit for 10 to 20 minutes on a stable Wi-Fi connection before assuming the linked session is healthy. This lets it finish its post-update sync.

Fix 8: Unlink and Relink From Scratch

Solves: Persistent issues nothing else fixes

If you've worked through fixes 1–7 and WhatsApp Web is still logging you out frequently, the session itself may be in a bad state. A clean relink usually resolves it.

  1. On your phone, open Linked Devices and log out every session, including the one on the computer that's been misbehaving
  2. On your computer, close WhatsApp Web entirely
  3. Clear cookies for web.whatsapp.com (Chrome: Settings → Privacy → Cookies → search "whatsapp" → delete)
  4. Restart your browser
  5. Go to web.whatsapp.com fresh and scan the QR code with "Keep me signed in" checked

This forces a completely new device pairing. Most lingering session issues clear with this.

Is It Possible WhatsApp Forced a Global Re-Login?

Occasionally, yes. WhatsApp has, in the past, deliberately logged everyone out of linked devices to push a security fix — when this happens, you'll typically see a message like "Your devices were logged out due to an unexpected issue. Please relink your devices."

This isn't anything you did wrong, and there's no fix — just scan the QR code and you're back in. It's rare, but it does happen.

If you're seeing this exact message and everyone you know is reporting the same thing, that's what's going on.

A Quick Note: It's Probably Not Your Browser Extensions

Whenever WhatsApp Web misbehaves, the first instinct is to blame browser extensions. In most cases of repeated logouts, the cause is not an extension — it's one of the fixes above (storage clearing, the 14-day rule, the device limit).

That said, aggressive privacy extensions that block third-party storage can interfere with WhatsApp's session token. If you've installed something specifically designed to wipe cookies or block browser storage, whitelist web.whatsapp.com in it.

Standard customization extensions (themes, fonts, backgrounds) don't touch browser storage — they only modify the visual layer of the page. They don't cause logouts.

Once You're Logged In and It Sticks

If you've made it this far, your WhatsApp Web session should now be stable. A few things worth doing once:

  • Review your Linked Devices monthly. Open WhatsApp on your phone and log out anything you don't recognize.
  • Don't use cookie-clearing tools in a way that touches WhatsApp. Whitelist the domain.
  • Make WhatsApp Web nicer to use. Since you're going to be staying logged in now, you'll be looking at it a lot. The default interface — same green color, same default font, same fixed layout — hasn't changed in years.

WhatsApp Web Customizer — featured by MakeUseOf, TechPP, and other tech publications in 2025–2026 — adds custom themes, fonts, backgrounds, and a privacy blur. As noted above, it doesn't cause logout issues. Free, open source, ~30 seconds to install.

The Bottom Line

WhatsApp Web logouts are almost always caused by one of a small number of things: temporary sessions you didn't make persistent, browser settings that clear cookies, third-party cleaner tools doing the same thing on a schedule, the 14-day phone-offline rule, or the 4-device limit. Work through fixes 1–4 in order and most people are sorted.
